Hi!
Does anyone have any info on the American 'Sterling Admiral Petrol Engines' (Sterling Engine Co. of Buffalo, New York) used in the (J.Samuel White built) Polish MTBs S-5 to S-10? They were also used in Landing Craft I believe. Has anyone worked on one?
I have some old adverts and a couple of photos and illustrations but haven't found out if they were 'V' configuration or 'straight/in line' cylinders. I do believe they were 'in-line', but how many cylinders did they have? I have spoken to 2 elderly Polish Skippers (still alive in their 80s and 90s!) who said they were formidable engines; VERY powerful and VERY thirsty!...and about half as heavy again as a 'Packard'. In the book 'Midnight Trader', about smuggling in the Med in the 1950s, Hugh Edwards, the author, says that they removed the 2 outer, wing engines in 'Taifun' (ex-MTB S-10), replacing them with Packards, but kept the centre Sterling engine (using the other 2 as spares....what happened to them I wonder?). 'Taifun' eventually sank off Cape Bon, North Africa so there's at least one at the bottom of the sea!
Any info would be gratefully received.
Tim
