Hello All,
I have been asked by a small specialist publisher to research the possibility of publishing an illustrated book covering the subject of MTBs and MGBs during their heyday. The scope is yet to be agreed but I fear may be heavily dependant on material available and, of course, space. I would be keen to place considerable emphasis on design, construction, engine configurations etc. Macklin's 'pre fab' approach to Fairmiles is a story in itself and the use of local yards around the country (and world) would be of considerable interest. We would hope to illustrate the book with contemporary photographs and some newly taken photography of surviving examples where relevant. The book would be a substantial hardback, around 200 pages, approx A4 size. The end result would be heavily illustrated, full of interest to those who know little of the subject and at the same time satisfyingly accurate for those with considerable knowledge. So my question is, as a starting point, where would I find the best photographic archive? Thanks in advance, Michael Herridge (Chichester UK) |

Hi Michael,
Well, you have started in the right place! clearly a book for commercial sale has implications for holders of pictures like the RN museum, Coastal forces heritage trust, etc links on this web-site which I am sure you can see....there are projects and completed vessels if you looked at "then and now" restoration at Watchet under "Watchet warships" and HMS Gay Archer, but also as I always mention, MTB 102 at Lowestoft, HDML Medusa again links on the links page, there have been of course some great books on coastal forces already, but as I say if I may, what is being done today to save and restore the craft and memories of the men and women of coastal forces is something I think could be of interest.... Regards Johnk
