Hello All Just been given a model Brave Class? Circa 52" long with fibreglass hull and single electric motor. Plans that came with it say "Modav PRECEDENT .... KD Perkasa Class, designed B Ayres Jan1976" Could that be the age of the model? The model is not very detailed but better stay that way, cos of kids ages. Now for the important questions where I need a bit (lot) of guidance really: 1. Could it be based on a real boat given that it is marked P47 and had some big missiles on the stern? 2. It has s a single 6v 9000rpm electric motor, will that be sufficiently powerful? 3. Any good (and cheap) books/guides out there as to how to set these things up including RC etc... Any thoughts most welcome. Thanks |

Hello Dave Yes, if it is 'Perkasa' - your model is of one of four Patrol Boats built for the Malaysian Navy in 1966 (ordered) shipped out in 1967. It was an export version of the RN 'Brave' class - I would suggest however that the Pennant Number is wrong (P150 -P153) were the numbers carried. With regard to the model - I do think that some Forum members will be able to help regarding the motor and R/C etc |

Hi. Dave. Are you not upgrading the model to either one or two screws I am tot sure how many turbines your class of boat had, it could have been two or three depending on the type of turbine.. But as to the motors give Alastair Graham a ring at Motors Direct. Tell him the type of boat, its length, estimated weight when finished. no and diameter of screws and he will tell you the size and type of motors you need. Hope this helps Regards Ted drum1 |

Right, I asked the question on the Mayhem forum and we need to find out more about your motor; Is the 6volt 9000 rpm motor a Jonson with a fan inside the casing?
Bob knows a thing or two about the subject, I suggest you take it from here, visit http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Forum_1.htm , and look for Propulsion advice topic. They are a very helpful and knowledgeable bunch of modellers who do CF craft occasionally, whereas we are on the whole CF enthusiasts who dabble in modelling! Rgds, Christian. |

Hi Dave There has been a lot of interest shown in your model on the Mayhem site, the contributors would like to see photos of it if possible, I'll happily post them there if you put them up here, or e-mail them to me at and I'll do it for you. Just to let you know, spent most of Saturday fitting out the model. I'm pretty sure its a Perkasa with a few odd "improvements". So absorbed I forgot the cup final was on telly! Anyway, after a busy day trying to fix my big boat, took the model out for a sea trial with the boys and it went like a dream. Although not highly detailed, from a distance (c.50 yards) it looked very life-like on the water. Especially bow wave, wake and the V shaped wave (whatever it is called?) which is generated behind a boat before it climbs fully onto the plane. Thanks chaps for the pointers. Dave ps Now got a question about my bigger boat. Has anyone heard of cutlass bearings shrinking?? She runs 1 3/4" shafts and when I lifted her last September the shafts were tight in the bearings, now there is about 1mm movement. I'm putting her back in the water in the next week or so and was not planning to replace the cutlass bearings. Frankly stumped.

Hi Dave, 1mm movement is not the end of the world, the rubber can wear quickly if you get a rope round the prop especially if there is any fishing line there which tends to work its way up the shaft. I would say as long as the wear is even then the engine is in line and as long as there is not vibration then I would let it go especially if you did not use the boat too often.

Hi Clive Thanks for comments. I'm going to plop her back in the Thames in 2 - 3 weeks time so I can spend some time pottering up and down to the pub. Wont be going fast. If I get time I'll take her down the big end, wave to Queen and Parliament etc and Ill be able to see how she runs at speed east of Wandsworth. I'm still baffled as I checked for play shortly after lifting her (and removing the props to get them cleaned up and balanced), the shafts were tight then but not now.
