A member recently asked about an incident that occurred in the latter part of 1956 at HMS Hornet. What I have been able to gather so far is that the major conflagration, which occurred on the 29th September 1956, left several vessels seriously damaged three of were deemed 'beyond repair' and scrapped in 1959. Those scrapped were: HMS Broadley, a "Ley" class Inshore Minesweeper of the M2001 Series, HMS Edlington, a "Ton" class Sweeper of the M1101 series and HMS Bisham, a "Ham" class Sweeper. A further "Ham" class, HMS Etchingham, was subsequently repaired and transfered to the Hong Kong RNR in 1959. Although there may well have been other vessels involved, this is the information that I have to date. |
