Hello all.
Just a quick post to let you all know about a new trust I will be setting up. The Scottish maritime museum has confirmed to me today that the Pinnace 1262 is mine. On the 30th of November I have an appointment with my local Volunteer development adviser to set up a charitable trust whose main aim will be obtaining funds for the restoration of Pinnace 1262. What I need from you guys is as many of you as possible to express an interest in joining. At the moment I can't promise you anything in return( having said that there’s no charge to express an interest!) though I will do my best to keep you guys informed via email newsletter of what’s happening.. But I ask that you bear with me and be patient as I have no idea what I am doing right now! So pm me if your interested. |

Hi Northeastuser,
Just seen your post on 1262, well done! hopefully she can be brought back, but stating the obvious to you, she is in a bad way of course. You are going the right way in getting advise to form a proper, legal charitable trust, no easy or quick thing but a good idea. Your advisor sounds very usefull, but also the Charity Commissioners could be of help, sure they will come up on a web search, and also an organisation called CAF the charities aid foundation based here in Kent, we at the Medway Queen use there banking system and as the name suggests, they are set up to support charities but also I know can offer advice on setting one up as well. Perhaps advice from existing boat and ship groups as well, and the guys such as Don and D-zine could offer advice, plenty about but direct help could be trickier!, but I wish you all the best. Hi Northeastuser,
Just had a look at 1262 again on the Boats for Sale section of BMPT site, well, as I said above, one hell of a job you have taken on! I know you have to look past peeling paint etc but...how much of the structure and hull planking will you need to sort?, other source of possible good advice is of course Asco, the FSMB contactable via the links section, Tony Wager is the chap there, great shots of her being restored and methods used.

Hi John, The front half of the hull is quite sound. However the removal of interior bulkheads have cased the deck house to push the deck down. I assume this implies rotten gunwales forward. The rear of hull has suffered badly from water penetration. At the least she needs New keel, keel hog, chine timbers gunwales and carlings. Oh yea and all of the for and aft stringers replacing and probably a large portion of hull planking will be unusable once it has all been removed to replace chine, stringers etc. I might if I am lucky end up with some original frames! I am going to try and work on the angle that the work on the boat is an aim in itself and therefore the more work then the longer the project will last. Hopefully once this boat is done then the new 1262 trust will look for another project to continue its work. The problem is trying to work out what angle to approach the project from. Yes she is to far gone, yes im am insane and yes you can have look round when shes done Billy. |

Hello Billy,
Very many thanks for your update on the state of 1262, indeed she is quite a challenge but as with steam engines, historic houses etc so long as some of the original material survives, it is still the "same" vessel. I am presuming she will remain in Scotland at least for now, an angle for funding could be under training and eduction for skills, a hot topic at the moment, and an angle we at the Medway Queen have relied on heavily. Really, from my "armchair" down here in Kent, I say that it could be a great project, but..well, just be carefull, the old adage about "boats are holes in the water into which money can be poured"! though I can see that you are aware of the problems. Hope my comments of some use or interest,
John Kempton |

Yes she will have to stay where she is until the charity is set up and funding for transport is found to bring her to Hartlepool. Of all the problems I have given myself ,assessing the condition of the 1262 is the smallest! I am very interested in hearing how you obtain funding. Though I do feel guilty even applying as I cant help thinking that every penny I get is penny that could have helped someone else. A mindset I am going to have to sort out right now I guess. But Seriously, any idea that you can think of to obtain funds is welcome. Comments from someone who obviously knows what they are talking about are always welcome. Billy. |

Hi Northeastuser! Think i applied to take on 1262 about a week after you. Since tried to take on Ml162(golden galleon) and working on aquiring hsl145(poss the last whaleback) Breaking up ML162 began last week which has made me realise how desperate the plight of these boats is and really p***ed me off at the cavalier attitude of the norfolk broads authority who spent £40k breaking her when i could have stabilised her for half that and made a profit. Hopefully Scottish maritime has given you space to restore her as they mentioned when they first advertised her. If you come by any DD planking for an MTB please let me know & can either buy, trade or work for it. Congrats on aquiring 1262, You are now a keeper of British history, We dont own these things, we just keep them safe for the next generation! Wish i could help but i live outside worcester and its a very long drive when you own a rascal van because your to sentimental to trade up. Good luck brother!...jim |

A boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood, into which one throws money
