i have almost completed a extensive re fit on my river class  COQUET. and am verry pleased with the result ,but was wondering if any one has any advice on how i can make her watertight  ,i think that the movement of the hull double diag has cracks and allows a small amount of water in all over and it seems to get worse after use as when first back in after new ant-fowling verry little comes in . Great to hear of the refit on the "Coquet"   followers like myself and other members on this Forum of old Military vessels like yours really do appreciate the time and money you have spent on her to keep her alive, as far as being watertight it all depends on how much water it is that is coming in, all boats move when underway even steel one's and bearing in mind the age of your boat it is unlikely you will get her really watertight unless you sheathed her. magic fingers or wizard would be the best people to contact in regards to acceptable water intake on an active wooden boat, without sounding like I am teaching you to suck eggs (instead of compressed air!) just make sure the bilges are spotlessly clean, no bits of wood lying about after the refit that might choke the bilge pumps, if you are really worried put a bilge suction system in using your main engines as bilge pumps as an emergency back up system. Best Wishes to you and the Coquet.

well done Dave,

can we see some photos? you will find that mahogany planks take longer to take up (swell) than soft wood, especially if she has been out of the water for an extended period. I have a carvel built mahogany launch which still took on water after 3 weeks being sunk on the slip, she is bone dry now.

Dave, don't worry about a bit of water coming in. MTB102 does this after every trip on the sea. She "works" all the time. There is no easy cure. Just make sure you have some decent auto bilge pumps fitted and keep the batteries charged. And as Tramontana says, keep the bilges clean. After a few days at rest there is less water ingress but the problem never goes away completely.

Richard.

Hi there
I recently bought the Avon and am in the process of refitting her. Unfortunately most of the fitting had walked in the years she was laid up and i was wondering if anyone had any drawings/pics of the lever arrangement for the rudders. Any contacts would be gratefully received
~Cheers

Well done Richard,

there has been a lot of work done before being laid up, I would be interested in the condition of her having been epoxied a 'while' ago.

I enquired about Arun as to wether her owner would sell me parts but I go a 'no', that was a while ago and things change.

I think these boats would look really good with a rear cockpit.... Better get my tin hat on!!

Also, I do have a pair of rudders and stocks with tillers which I recon may be spot on for you, I'll have a better look at condition, size and materials I'll get back to you.

Best of luck, Clive..

The condition look very good - There has been some cracking of the chine rail(?) which will need soem attention and on the inside the paint is all cracked at the plank joints - I'm guessing they are very dry now and have shrunk quite a bit. Otherwise I dont imagine she is that diferent from when she was shrink wrapped. If you have rudders that would be amazing - I was in the process of designing some to get made from stainless! I'll try and get soem pics and post them in the near future - unfortuately my camera has been playing up

Cheers

Hi Richard,

These are them, I think they are bronze and in good nick, the flat part of the trailing edge is about 12inches. Pm me if they look like they will do, they are not the same as the original design but may do you...

hi dave thanks for the reply, my parents river class is called  frends folly we have had her for about 17 years , she still has the original brass thank fitted and rudder lay out and rudders like the other guys asking about on the forum not very big rudders at all .the ones in the previous photo is nothing like the originals but would do the job .we have been trying to find the original name of friends folly but with no luck, we was allways told that the previous  owner of avon and friends folly was friends and they bought both boats together from some were like portsmourth and the paper work for both boats was on avon how true is not known ,but i due know that when avon it a bouy in the humber that they was with friends folly , if i new how to put some photos of her on the forum i would but she is on the historic vessel web site she is moored at stanilands at thorne she as two fully recond perkins 4236m with 1-1 gearboxs and does about 12- 14kif any one can help with the name of friends folly then let me know she also as a keel fitted which most didnt i think the serial number may be behind the diesel tank but im not taking that out again!  many thanks phil. c

Thanks for the pictures Clive. I think my plan of action is to go and have a look at another rivers class boat - possible the humber and coquet (they are all slightly different after all these years it appears). That way i can get a better understanding of what is needed of the rudders - my hope - money willing - it to re engine the the avon to the original power so rudder decision will be quite critical. It would be fantastic if your rudders are suitable and thanks again for the offer. As soon i know more i'll let you know
Cheers

No problem Richard, I doubt the rudders are going anywhere soon. Please call in when you go to see Humber.
