The photo is of my grandfather in a sailor uniform the hat says HRM Royal Oak
Written on the back is

631 Comp RASC water train Building A44 Royal Woolwich Arsenal 1936

Dose anybody now what this means?

Hi Roz,

Well, RASC is Royal Army Service Corps, they had the WW2 RASC Coquet launch which is planning a round Britain trip, bit odd that he is at an Army base, albeit here on the river Medway we see occasionally RN personnel working with the Royal Engineers on thier assault craft, beyond that can't really offer anything else, but sure others here can help.

I wonder if Water Train means "Water Training" perhaps he was there to train RASC  people in boat handling, ropework etc, just a guess.

Hi there,

Indeed, sounds very plausible, logical to have RN personnel involved with training, as mentioned, nowadays the RE's have a training base on the Medway for assault craft and floating bridge building.
