Hello there,
new member to the forum here, Thought people might be interested in a few photos of the 52' Harbour Service Launch I'm rebuilding. She was built in 1965/1966 by Dorset Lake in Poole and spent her working life based at pompey dockyard.

As she was when i bought her

on the slip preparing to fit the new stem

on the slip awaiting fresh antifoul

Welcome aboard 'kernow_dave' - always nice to welcome new members.
Your vessel does look as if she is getting plenty of TLC - a nice looking craft. What are the plans for her future? - please keep us up to date with the progress - and the very best of luck.

Hi Kernow_Dave Where abouts do you keep her, as she used to be in Bembridge near the Duver. I used to helm it from time to time in Pompey its local name was Delta 15.Has she still got her Doric stove in her. I believe the boat has been in Bembridge since she was sold out of service in 96/97.

I've got a berth at newport, Bought her out of bembridge in 2006 and have been working away on it ever since!

I've fitted a new stem and apron along with replacing most of the stringers and frames in the forepeak, replated a fair bit of the coachroof along with building a new funnel and wheelhouse as they'd been removed when the previous owner built a larger wheelhouse. i've also put the engine exhaust back to being a dry exhaust up the funnel rather than water cooled over the side, sounds much better now

The Doric stoves still going strong, had it apart the other year and made up a new oven liner and welded up some cracks in the firebox castings.

The previous owner bought it from pompey dockyard in june 1997 I believe she was one of the last to be sold off?.

incidentally If anyone knows of any 52ft hld's being broken up or converted i'm after some fittings (handrail staunchions, bollards, engine spares etc) any tip offs would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

I dont think its being broken up for spares but I think there is one of those at the top of the Hamble river at the Foulkes Chandlery Barge, black top sides, white super structure. I've got an idea when I last saw her on the slip, a couple of years ago, she had a copper sheathed bottom.

I spoke to the chap, I think he said single Foden, fine old ship she is!

I see her from the M27 every day, moored on the pontoon on the far side of the river from the chandlery barge, up river, near the wreck of the thames barge and the MFV they are sawing/burning now.

Been there sometime and I dont think she gets much attention.

Is Somerset still up at Newport? How is she looking?

Ben

Long time since I posted those photos!
In the intervening years I've replaced pretty much all of the beam-shelf, totally replaced the deck and deckbeams, new lower rubbing strakes and stringers, quite a bit of re-framing... The list goes on!

Heres a few photos showing her out on the slip again as of dec 2013:

And a slightly older photo showing the compact Galley which I've added to the forward cabin:

Hi Dave,

Impressive work!

I don't suppose you fancy a 6 month holiday in New Zealand doing up an Admiral's barge do you Wink

Kurnow is a common name in these parts. You might even discover some long lost relatives.

I wandered along the quay on the otherside today to look at a boat I like to keep an eye on, looked across and saw your HLD, she's looking great!
