Hi Everyone,
I was speaking to a WW2 Air Sea Rescue veteran who actively involved with the RTTL & Pinnace at the RAF museum in Hendon.
He served on the Whalebacks and later Seaplane Tenders and asked me if there were any ex-ASR boats still around. The museum has recently purchased a Seaplane tender and wants an ex-ASR Hants & Dorsets or whaleback to save.
I know of the Clive's MASB and HSL145 in West Mersea. Does anyone know what happened to Robrina or the H&D in the Dauntless boatyard?
There was a 63' boat being restored on the south coast a few years ago.
It would be great if we could help locate and save one of the few survivors. The boat must be WW2 vintage, ex-ASR and 63' or greater.

HI Don,
That's interesting, the 145 is quite far go as per the pics, the one at Dauntless was also on the site but suspected broken back, but if going into a museum....better than nothing ie scrapped.

Dear Don, There are always the Halcon and Dauntless Boatyards at Canvey Island, I'm not an expert but, one see's half a dozen boats which roughly fit the description you mention.
The 'Whaleback' at Dauntless may have a broken back, but she floats twice every day and does it matter when the Museum would have to spend a Million to restore her. John Cook

As a static display would it matter if she had a bust keel or leaks a bit? if she was being prepared for dry static display what would be wrong with softwood screwed into place and painted up to look the part? It would give the feel of the size and show off the most striking hull lines ever produced (Whaleback IMHO)
after all she would be an original boat not a copy, there is a man down the road from me who makes fiberglass Spitfires, Hurricanes and V2 bombs, they are fine for static display, he even refurbs them after 15 or so years!

I've been looking at the problem of moving large boats by road. These guys below do a lot of UK work and can handle EXCEPTIONAL loads as you'll see from their web site.

Definately up for a mooch around canvey. Any yards with slips there? they were tough old tubs but lightly built, wouldnt want to lift one without lots of bracing if damaged. that said mtb 24 has had a broken back for 20yrs & hasnt imploded yet. Got a few large seasoned oak trees to cut into a keel. can buy a table saw & make into floorboards if any swaps for mahogany or sapele for 145 & i deliver. Off on roadtrip in few weeks so take my camera to canvey & mk1 eyeball. Let me know if museum takes one, i'll mud monkey for a week to get her ashore

If I can help, I use a small clubhouse at Canvey 40ft long by 10ft, flush toilet, put 'u' up sofa, give me a call, I'll lend you the key, got tools, band saw, chop saw, electric, got two members of the Trust at Dauntless Boatyard.
Dont forget we have the 'drifter' Vanguard, brought over thirty chaps back in 1940; we would like her 'looked at' in passing.

hi there, we have a 68ft hants & dorset asr for sale at 25k oiro. In the last 10 yrs 2605 has been lifted out of the water to replace planks around transom & made sure hull is sound. She`s had new decking, (still planking on topsides in some areas needed). Although she`s looking sad, she is still mobile with her twin V8 perkins.
