Here we are back on the BMPT forum after 11 years - or more!
I now have BP on my moorings safe and sound. She is advertised on several websites and the infamous EBay. After loosing the engines to the Anglia Maritime Association 10 years ago I let BP go to a 'restorer' and so she then went down the 'liveaboard' route.
The last owner just 'walked away' so I stepped in and made her watertight and gave her a lick of paint . Her hull is as good as ever and she takes very little water. Lots of the original equipment is fortunatley still in place.
I want her to go to a kind home and have so far been approached by a few decent people who have her well being in mind.
I do wonder if it would be possible to fit engines again as everything is still intact. (Cannot find the advert for the SM's on the BMPT website.)
If any body has any serious ideas, please let me know as I will require the mooring in a few months.

Hello Jamie

That unfortunate incident is long in the past. The AMT was quite rightly disbanded and stripped of it's charitable status.
The gent who was in charge was a person by the name of Hunt (Neil) who met his end in a car accident.
There are a few members of the 'trust' still around in Lowestoft.
I think the engines are still around somewhere - complete with gearboxes. I don't think it will be long before they turn up (it's a small world, the classic ships and vehicles).
Thank you for your offer and it makes me think that perhaps if any members do have any information as to the whereabouts of BP's engines I would be very grateful (£££!)

Thanks
Mark.

I have just bought Blue Peter and am in the process of arranging transport for her to Kent where I am going to restore her. I have a pair of Perkins 6.354 engines that I plan to put in her and am looking forward to getting her back to what she should be. I am lucky enough to have a good friend who is a shipwright and so he keep me on track with her.

It's good news for Blue Peter after all this time!
I am glad Alan has now taken her over and I have great faith in his ability to do a good professional job on the restoration.
All that's left is to get her safely down to his boat yard.

I am sure a lot of people will be relieved.

Mark.

Good news...look forward to hearing the updates.  Is there any plan to reinstate the centre shaft and engine?

its good she is going to a good home, but it boils my p_ss that the original engines have been stolen, and are still floating around somewhere, they will turn up in time, watch this space, all the best with the resto mate, Jamie

At this stage I'm thinking of just putting in just 2 engines, the slight twist is that they are the 6.354 with turbos so the 2 should roughly put out the horsepower of the original 3 non turbo engines. It's still very early days and I'll need to inspect the stern gear to see that it will cope with this arrangement.

Not too sure that the engines will turn up! I had four S6M's stolen in one hit probably went straight to the scrap yard!!!!

Just a note to say Blue Peter is safely moored on the river Medway after the trip down by road from Norfolk. Good job done by the boat delivery company.

Hi there,

Could not find "new post" so....if you care to, look at web-site for National Historic Ships think http://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk - www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk but not 100%, a new fund Your Heritage, up to £100,000 but....says for private people and and for profit groups.......now I know, HLF funding takes some time, effort and work to get, well if it was easy....but just a thought for any of our historic craft....

Well John. Blue Peter is moored at Cuxton so only about 3 miles upstream from you. There is a lot of repair work to do before she's ready to cruise down the river, but at this stage I am very gratefull that she didn't arrive in kit form on the lorry.

Hi Alan,

Ah, good old Cuxton! do know it....indeed not far so could pop along at some stage, as you say, good news she made it in one piece, can I say here re the funding post above, thanks to Pioneer for correcting my typo, the fund is "Our Heritage" not "Your Heritage".......or go to http://www.hlf.org.uk - www.hlf.org.uk direct, as per other comments, they don't do 100% grants, you need I think around 25% of cash, in kind support, and if you have them, volunteer hours but all that will be in the guidance notes.....

Just a quick update on progress on Blue Peter. I have started replacing the rotten frames on the starboard side. Although there are a lot to replace, the good news is that access is remarkably easy and so far the condition of the structure of the boat is as we expected ie no unexpected horrors have appeared yet.

Hi Alan,

Great news there, was just thinking another RASC vessel is at Cuxton...Amiens I think, see her on the river on high days in the summer,  glad to hear no major suprises there, see another craft now home at RAF Hooten park, HSL 2552, bit more to do on her as you can see from the web-site, see links page here. I really do admire you guys taking on these wooden historic craft, Medway Queen in steel of course, patched and painted her but nothing more on the old hull...now of course brand new so cheated a bit! all the very best,

Hi Alan,

Fantastic! when you said you were replacing planks I thought she would be ashore for a while! but clearly not of course, great to see her afloat, if you are underway this year, do give us a call at Chatham Marina, appreciate not all that far away for a trip come to think of it.....but still, be great to see an historic craft with us.....well done and all the best,

Johnk

Here are a few photos to show how the repairs to Blue Peter are progressing. To summarise we have replaced most of the cabin structure above deck level apart from the wheelhouse ( which has been repaired) and most of the frames and bulkheads have been renewed. Still a bit to go but hoping to give her a run later in the year.

Just a quick update . I have managed to get hold of a pair of Perkins S6m engines which were the correct original engines. Assuming they are all ok after some tlc I will use these instead of the pair of 6354 perkins engines that I had planned to use. If anyone has any spares for the S6m engines they are prepared to sell then I am interested in buying them. Merry Xmas everyone.Smile
