My farther in law, aged 94, has just been awarded Chevalier of the Legion D'Honour for his service aboard HDML 1091 at Omaha on D-Day 1944. How many other veteran crew members have been awarded this honour.

Recently two veterans that I know of have received the award - you can see them in this list of tweets, with links to respective articles: https://spitfiresofthesea.com/latest-news/
In 2014, the French government decided that all veterans of Operation Overlord were eligible for the award, so theoretically, any veteran who served in coastal Forces and played some role in the liberation of France is entitled to it. However, I don't know how many people have received it, as it still needs to be applied for. Regards, Steve

Hi there,
Many thanks for this, yes I have seen more veterans being awarded of late in the media, it would be great of course for those still with us if eligible to be also honoured....aware of course, many are men and women of great modesty who might not wish the attention. Johnk |
