I found this old oil-on-canvas painting in a loft of a house clearance,, it's signed but the signature is hard to read? I did some research on the canvas maker and the canvas makers mark on the back dates this to before 1917 as the postcode for the makers address changed to "W1" instead of "W" in 1917 so this must be a WWI era painting of the period,, but I don't reconise the small fast boats with the torpedo's on the side? they don't look like ones I have seen of WWI, the ships look like the old Dreadnoughts to me as I can see the front guns!! it's a real cool painting done in the impressionist style with great use of colour..

Hi there,

Indeed, by no means an expert as Christian, but clearly a turret on the back which I don't think any WW1 vessel had....but how come the marking etc you mention...perhaps an old old canvas re-cyled during WW2, things fo course in short supply, could the painting in fact have been over-painted on another.....interesting none the less.

Must agree with you Christian.

Post WW11. Stylised cabin cruisers with cabin windows on the speedicraft. Anti aircraft guns also!

The capital ships have built up superstructure and no tripod masts etc.

Not a Marine artist.
