As most of us know, this boat has an exceptional history and is very much worth saving. She is basically sound according to John Manning,an ex-marine engineer who is looking after her,and would like to restore her for non-profit use.See the boat at

http://www.nhsc.org.uk/index.cfm/event/getvessel/vref/393

We are all keen on Coastal Forces craft and invest a lot of our time and effort in models, research, visits etc, heres a chance for us all as like minded people to get together and make a difference,I for starters would like to be able to point her out to my kids and tell them how I helped ensure she's still around.I have pledged £500.00 to John who up until now has not been accepting donations as he was not 100% certain he would go ahead. Please call him on 1508 548686 and pledge your money,time,support,knowledge-whatever you have that you think will make a difference.Come on-let's do it!

Concerning the Golden Galleon.  In the 1980's I serviced this vessel in the dry dock at Great  Yarmouth annually.  The owner was very keen on ensuring its sea worthiness even though she only sailed from Great Yarmouth through Breydon water to Reedham before turning around and returning.  We religiously changed the two propeller shafts on each docking for two that were kept in the shipyard although no work was ever carried out to those removed.  Her hull was always surveyed and any work carried out by the boatwrights.  A fine vessel and well worth restoring to her former glory. Yes she is still moored near Great Yarmouth.

I spoke to Mr Manning and he is getting the title formalised and a commitee together with a view to get some work started this summer. Once this is done, he can accept donations.

Hello,

Just been looking at the forum re Golden Galleon, very pleased to hear that Mr Manning is trying to take her on, speaking to Richard Basey of MTB 102 last year, he said that he was trying to help some dutch guys take her on as she served there at sometime. However, if local people can do something for her, great. Tride the number for Mr Manning but just got through to BT! I do hope he can form a group, I along with many I am sure would be willing to be supportive. I may be speaking out of turn, but perhaps approaches to MTB 102 and Asco 4195 would be helpfull in terms of technical support, though of course these two vessels need all the support they can get, if possible we should co-operate as much as possible to save these great vessels.

This is a sad education to anyone who wants to take on a historic boat that isn't politically correct to own these days.

Like a dutch consortium & a couple of others(Not forgetting mr Mannings heroic efforts) i offered to take her on just to be told by the BA to politely b off.

According to the politicians ww2 never happened. It upsets the french as they have to admit they really are surrender monkeys. The Germans are understandably coy about that episode of history. Brussels are impotent there as thier claim to fame is a fictional detective with a dodgy moustache who was invented by an English woman.

If we forget the mistakes of previous generations we are doomed to repeat them!!

People lived & died on these boats and if we forget that then our generation or our childrens are condemmed to the same fate!

 Heres an example..

A young lad joined the navy in 1937 aged 17. He had a good laugh & made lots of friends. They all enjoyed the navy lifestyle of a girl in every port until the outbreak of war. A few months into the war his ship got torpedo'd.

Him & his best mate were lucky enough to survive & even got posted to the same ship when they were reassigned. Things went well & the friends from the same town made a lot of new friends aboard a destroyer & broke a lot of hearts in different ports.

A couple of years into the war that destroyer was also sunk by a Uboat and miraculously the two schoolfriends survived. When they were picked up by ASR crews they were given leave for a few weeks. Upon reporting back for duty they both said they want to serve on submarines. The now 23yr old sailor failed the training program on a depth test while his old friend was assigned to a submarine. The submarine left port a week later and has never been heard of since.

The sailor survived the war and hasnt spoken of it since!

That 17yr old sailor is my great uncle & while i'de love to document his story the guy is in his late 80's & dont want to push it. I only know this much of his story from what his sisters have told me.

If we let our history slide away we are condemming ourselves to repeat it! Think the old Yugoslavia proved that a single Europe cant be achieved without a lot of oppression & bloodshed. Rome wasnt built in a day but it was built with the loss of millions of lives. Do we really want to see that again??

These boats represent the very finest parts of the human spirit as well as mankinds darkest hour! When we are all long gone they should still be preserved as a warning from history and a reminder that there's a hero in the most ordinary man when its all on the line!!

Lest we forget shall we suffer the consequences of our ignorance

The man who broke Golden Galleon called me today, I may go and see him (when I return his call) probably trying to flog me bits off it!

I think he has finished now but if there is anything to photo or take (build nos or whatever) i'll ask. I get on well with John, he is a good 'lad' and has helped me out a few times so we will see what I come home with (more if he reads this!)
