Hello,

In 1944 J.S. White in Cowes built six 71'6" MTBs numbered 424 to 429.

All were transferred to Polish Navy upon completion to be returned after the war. There were some structural problems with those boats and first three had to return to the shipyard to have the torpedo tubes landed, while other three never became fully operational.

Can anybody comment on those boats?

Dear Marek,

I have only limited info:

From three Websites I got info regarding the Polish S-boats.
1. http://private.psi.com.pl/pmw/start_e.htm    (no info on S-5)
2. http://info.fuw.edu.pl/~janbart/scig.html       (much less detailed)
3. http://www.alliesinwar.com/gordon_cavells_mtb_45_s3.htm.

Unfortunately, info on Polish MTBs in (English) books is rather limited.

Greetings,

Jan

Hello Jan,

Thanks for your answer. First two addresses are located on Polish sites, but the third one is new to me.

Best regards - Marek

MTB426 in 1945 with 6-pdr fwd,2 18" T/Tubes,2 twin .303 Lewis guns and a twin Oerlikon aft.Good for very nearly 40kts with 3 Sterling Admirals.Note similarity to later Gay Class FPBs.This pic and info from RN Minor War Vessels In Focus-Lt Cdr Ben Warlow. Was one of these the boat featured in Hugh Edwards' book "Midnight trader"?

Hi Marek

I hope you still visit this site occasionally, just been browsing through the older posts and saw this.Did you know MTB426 (Polish S-7) survives as houseboat "Thanet" at Shoreham?

This info courtesy of Phil Simons "Retired On The River",recent pic was taken by my father.

Regards,Christian
