Hi there,

Yes, that is a great summary of the situation, early early days and much work of course to do, the point re S130 very clear, I think great to see the work being done, skill etc, but....what a job, again I see this project as complimentary to what we already have, many thanks,

myself and my team bought s130 across the north sea from wilhemshaven on her own bottom , she was in pretty good shape otherwise it wouldnt have been achievable. the main problem with her structure was the degrading of the metal framing in the aft end and its subsequent effect on the timber attached to it . The hull itself is pretty good as it was built far better than the D s . Im sure restoration of parts of the hull are relatively easy and a piddle in the ocean compared to the rest of the project. Something Kevin Wheatcroft wont be phased by

If they're serious about a dog is it worth them looking at the wrecked dog in chatham? May be half the chine planking & a keel thats useable. prob be as much original boat as the cutty sark is now & they're throwing millions at that. Theres a couple of spitfires out there made from an engine block & id plate that claim historic status so why not a dog?
Best of British to the 130 team. We have more working warboats than the Americans so why not balance it with a little kriegsmarine. besides they were fantastically built & engineered for their time.
Although if any of Bob Hichens old flotilla are left they get my vote for restoration

Hi there,

Yes, not been back to her for a long time, so not sure what is still left!, yes you can in some cases get away with a lot not being origional, we all know the arguments, perhaps best if we do go ahead, have it as a full replical and have done, but as per all last, this is very early days and a lot to work out first,

Just an idea. Could the pnbt use the bits of these boats as its a working museum? Maybe the side of 458 or similar lost cause mounted on side of a workshed, the chatham dog's nose on front of clubhouse, office ect. sure a use could be found without turning it into the disneyland of warboats. If chatham dog has no interest then i'll remove carcass and make desks from her(condition is one goes to admiralty), don't want to but it means some parts of the old girl will survive. my drawknives, chisels ect are in a chest made from a boat that i was forced to scrap.
Best of luck to a replica 'D'. The fairmiles were the original flatpack (much assembly required) but like many coastal forces warboats were 80% housewife built & 20% shipwright. If the right yard can be found, proper materials & workforce at right price then its def doable. If not we let down that generation as enjoying the advantages they never had. of course common sense in a workforce back then was a lot cheaper than the health & safety stasi forcing you to employ idiots & treat the rest of workforce the same.
Thats my late night rant, Any chance a new Dog will get a pennant number? if its just for a week it only seems right. Best of British to the effort!
